How to run your first break on Whatnot

Last updated 2026-11-04 · 3 min read

To run your first break, pick a simple format, price your spots to cover product, fees and shipping, schedule a show, run the platform's randomizer on screen, open the product live and ship quickly. Keep the first one small.

  1. Set up your seller account. Finish your seller setup in the Whatnot app, including payout details and shipping settings. Follow Whatnot's own steps, since they change. See help.whatnot.com.
  2. Pick a product you know. Choose a box or case that you can describe in plain words. Know what a good card looks like in it.
  3. Pick one simple format. For a first break, a pick your team break or a random team break with a small number of spots is easiest to explain. See Break types explained.
  4. Check the rules. Platforms limit some formats and have rules about randomizers. Whatnot explains its card break standards at trust.whatnot.com/card-breaks.

Add those up, divide by the number of spots, then check the result with the calculator on our fees page. Our article How to price spots so you actually profit walks through an example.

  • Write a clear listing. Product, format, number of spots, price and what a spot includes.
  • Set your shipping. Decide what you charge and when you will ship.
  • Schedule the show early. Give buyers time to see it and ask questions.
  • Prepare your tools. Good lighting, a stable camera, a table with the product, sleeves and toploaders ready, and a way to see chat.

  1. Welcome buyers and explain the format. Say it out loud even if it is in the listing.
  2. Fill the spots. When all spots are sold, show the full list of owners on screen before you open anything.
  3. Run the randomizer. Use the platform's built-in tool, on screen. Let buyers see the result. See Using your platform's randomizer the right way.
  4. Open the product. Show each pack and each card. Read out hits clearly and say which buyer owns them.
  5. Keep notes. Write down each hit and who gets it as you go. If you tap the wrong spot, say so and fix it where everyone can see.

  • Pack carefully. Sleeve and toploader the hits. See Shipping cards safely and fast.
  • Ship within the time you promised.
  • Check your numbers. Compare what you took in with product cost, fees, supplies and postage. That is your profit.

It locks the spot list, saves the randomizer result and every hit with the time, and gives buyers a link to check. It also builds your profit and shipping list. It never runs the draw and does not replace the platform's randomizer.

This article is general information, not financial or legal advice. Check your platform's current rules before each show.
